This noon (Friday) CATALYST arts writer Amie Tullius and I dropped by the Salt Lake City Main Library to see the Cedarlake Ballet Company perform in the library auditorium. It had been described as an “installation”; we didn’t have a clue how that would work, and were curious to see. What we saw was more than amazing. I’ve seen quite a bit of dance through the years but I must say I saw moves here that I’ve never seen before. The “installation” aspect was the most delightful: Dancers were on the wide open staircase, inserting themselves into the ample crowd, and ~ most fun of all ~ dancing in the moving glass elevators.
I’m not clear on why they call themselves ballet instead of modern dance. Modern they certainly are, down to the choreography, music and costumes. They perform tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 7) night at Kingsbury. No glass elevators, but my guess is they’ll have other surprises up their sleeves. And, minus such clever delighters, the dancing is very, very good.
